Poser Pro 2014 60 Percent Off

For a limited time Smith Micro is offering Poser Pro 2014 for $199, which is about 60% off the regular price. Upgrades from previous versions of Poser are also on discount, ranging from $140 for older versions down to $100 for Poser Pro, Pro 2010, and Pro 2012.

What’s So Good About Poser?

Considering the amount of content and features Poser Pro 2014 packs, this is a pretty darn good deal. For DAZ Studio users looking for something a little more robust, while still very cost-effective, Poser might just be the way to go. I personally use both. I love the additional features of Poser, especially the easy to use “indirect lighting”, physics and animation tools. I prefer DAZ Studio for its user interface, integrated 3Delight render engine, and native Genesis support.

Poser Pro 2014 features include:

  • Full rigging and weight mapping
  • Physics simulation – Soft and hard body dynamics (cloth, hair, jiggly fleshy bits etc)
  • Morph tools
  • Hair creation tools
  • Fitting room (refit clothing designed from one model to another)
  • Advanced OpenGL preview – high quality shadows and materials
  • Node-based material editor
  • Indirect Lighting (Global illumination)
  • Image Based Lighting
  • True HDR support
  • Robust animation tools
  • Pixar subdivision surfaces (OpenSubdiv)

…and much more.

Reality 3

Also hard to pass up over at Smith Micro, is Pret-a-3D’s Reality 3 for Poser (currently $27.95). For those unfamiliar with the product, it is an scene translator and exporter for LuxRender, which is a physically based unbiased render engine. Essentially LuxRender is capable of producing physically accurate images as it closely simulates the behaviour of light and how it interacts with materials and objects.

Skilled use of the render engine can and does produce photorealistic images. The main drawback with LuxRender and unbiased rendering in general is that it is typically much slower than biased engines like Firefly (Poser) and 3Delight (DAZ Studio), though with the continued development of LuxCore, much faster GPU rendering methods are becoming more feasible.

A Note on Poser 3 for DAZ Studio

The good news for DAZ Studio users (that have been waiting, both patiently and otherwise) is that Reality 3 for DAZ Studio is in rapid development and will contain new features not yet in the Poser version. Paolo Ciccone, the developer, regularly posts updates on development progress at Pret-a-3D’s blog.

Victoria 6 Free For (Very) Limited Time

Greetings fellow 3D enthusiasts! Some cool news out of the DAZ camp for you all today. In celebration of her first birthday this weekend (11:59 PM MST Sunday June 29th, 2014) you can pick up Victoria 6 for free. For those new to the latest generation of Genesis figures, you will have to download the Genesis 2 Female base figure (also free). The Genesis 2 base figures, female and male, are both available for download direct from your “Product Library” at DAZ 3D and via the DAZ Install Manager (DIM).

There are a lot of DAZ Studio and Poser users out there that have yet to dip their feet into the Genesis 2 pool, even as far as installing the base G2 figures, let alone grabbing either the latest Victoria and Michael incarnations. Can we hope to see a similar offer for Michael 6? Let’s hope. So, if you haven’t yet picked up the figure the time is now. Pass the word along.

Rooster Teeth/RWBY Animation Pannel

Just a quick post here. I came across this Rooster Teeth animation panel filmed in Melbourne Australia. There is a lot of RT waffle and banter, but for those interested in 3D animation from about 35 mins in to about 55 mins there is some really good stuff about the animation process of RWBY. Monty talks about working with Poser, time saving trickery, using 2D assets, quick and cheap particle effects, and demonstrates some technique in Maya. Monty also demonstrates how Poser 2014’s bullet physics will be implemented in future episodes of the show for elements such as hair, clothes, and of course, the all important bouncing of breasts.

All-in-all there is a lot more meat on the bones of this panel in terms of Poser related stuff than the RTX panel, but again most of the audience were happy to ask questions about weapons and characters, so other than that 20 min window there are only a few little sound bites here and there for the 3D crowd.

News Bites 15-Nov-13

Ok, so there are always these little snippets of news that I want to write about, but either I can’t get together something significant enough to post or I’m strapped for time. News Bites is a new column or segment or whatever, where I’ll gather up all the crunchy crumbs and serve them up. Sound appetising? Hmm… Let’s hope it tastes better than it sounds, and entirely more hygienic.

What’s covered: 3Delight 11, DAZ Studio User Guide (by DAZ 3D), Complete Guide to DAZ Studio 4 (by Paolo Ciccone), DAZ Studio user image gallery, and the release of Vue 2014.

3Delight 11 – Quad Core For Free!

Released back on the 1st of October, 3Delight Studio Pro offers some great new features. Included is a new path-tracing algorithm, which is apparently much more efficient at rendering multi-bounce GI, SSS, and motion blur. There have also been multi-threading optimisations and significant improvements to all round raytrace render speeds. Support has been added for deep image output via EXR 2.0 file format.

Undoubtedly, there will be some time before we see the new algorithm implemented for DAZ Studio, but for adventurous and script savy super nerds this should be little problem. For such as these, and those that prefer to work with the standalone application, there is an additional piece of news here. As of version 11, we have access to a quad-core license (old version was dual core). DNA has also promised that users of the free version of the program will see releases more frequently, so we can expect our versions to be much closer to what the paying user base get to play with.

Well, that was a rather significant bite of news right there. What’s next?

Not a manual, but DAZ Studio has a User Guide

As of the 11th of November DAZ Studio has a User Guide and a QuickStart Guide. While these documents are still a far cry from the manual many DAZ Studio users have been asking for (for a good LONG time), they are accessible and perfect for getting new users in and orientated. Topics covered include the basic layout of the GUI and its various preconfigurations.(who knew there was such a thing?), posing, surface editing and render settings. The section on lighting will be of particular use for the many people new to 3D/CG that find this element particularly challenging.

Back to waiting for that manual.

DAZ 3D’s Long Lost Galleries Are Back

DAZ 3D user galleryWe all know what a disaster the website updates were at DAZ. The stores still flips out from time-to-time (or all the time, depending on who you ask), member avatars for the forums have just come back etc, etc, but since at least the 13th Galleries ARE back, though in Public beta. DAZ isn’t promoting the beta outside the members area of the forum, but all users have access now.

To configure your gallery preferences and to start your own collection you just need to visit the new “Gallery” tab in your “My Account” area of the DAZ 3D website. This new feature is still obviously in development, so navigating around the gallery is awkward, but it is shaping up nicely and has a lot of promise. Come by and check me out 🙂

Vue 2014 Release

Vue 2014 - 3D forest rendering. Our last compelling news bite of the day is E-on’s launch of the updated line of Vue products. On the 6th E-on released Vue xStream 2014, and Vue Infinite 2014. The lighter versions of the program (Complete, Esprite, Studio, Pioneer etc) will be released later in the month. E-on says the staggered release is aimed at dealing with download demand and providing better customer service.

Vue 2014 Improvements include:

  • (xStream) Better FBX support allowing for import of textured geometry and cameras. Camera motion import and export.
  • World Point Position Pass – compositing flexibility
  • Physically Accurate Sunlight Model and Photometric Lights – nuf said?
  • Tone Mapping – multiple tone mapping filters to simulate human eye or camera light responces
  • Natural Grain – natural colour variation suited for… natural stuff.
  • EcoSystem improvements – natural clumping algorithm to give more natural vegetation distribution.
  • Improved Plant Factory compatibility
  • MORE!

And there it is, the first edition of our new News Bites. How does it work for you? Let us know.
